History of Fantasmic!
Fantasmic! originally debuted at Disneyland Park in California on May 13, 1992, along the Rivers of America. It was designed as a large-scale nighttime spectacular combining water projections, live performers, Disney characters, music, pyrotechnics, boats, and special effects in a way that had not been done before at a Disney park.
The Florida version opened at Disney-MGM Studios, now Disney’s Hollywood Studios, on October 15, 1998. Unlike the Disneyland version, which uses the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island, the Walt Disney World version was built inside the dedicated Hollywood Hills Amphitheater on Sunset Boulevard.
The story of the Walt Disney World version is similar to the original Disneyland version, with Mickey Mouse dreaming as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice before Disney villains try to take over his imagination. The introduction and finale are very similar in spirit, but there are several differences throughout the show.
At Disneyland, Fantasmic! is performed on the Rivers of America and has featured scenes such as Peter Pan, the Sailing Ship Columbia, and the Mark Twain Riverboat. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the show uses a larger amphitheater setting, a rocky mountain stage, more villains, Steamboat Willie in the finale, and updated sequences featuring Disney heroes such as Moana, Mulan, Aladdin, Pocahontas, and Elsa.
A third version of Fantasmic! also ran at Tokyo DisneySea in Japan beginning in 2011. That version was staged on Mediterranean Harbor and had its own unique presentation, using floating barges, water screens, and a style that felt different from both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World versions. The Tokyo DisneySea version later ended, leaving Disneyland Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios as the two Disney parks where Fantasmic!
"Be there as the forces of good and evil battle it out in Mickey’s dream during this extravagant open-air nighttime musical.
