by

Ride the Icy Strait Point gondolas down from the summit of Hoonah Mountain in full 4K POV, with amazing views of Icy Strait, the Alaska rainforest, and the cruise ship docks below. We start at the top, walk up to the red Sky Peak Gondola, and ride down more than 1,500 feet to Wilderness Landing. Then we walk over to the free green Transporter Gondola and glide through the treetops to Adventure Landing, the dock by the historic cannery where our ship, the Disney Magic, was waiting. Soft, relaxing music plays gently over the natural sounds of the gondolas, with no commentary.

Planning an Alaska cruise? Whether you're sailing with Disney, Norwegian, Holland America, Princess, Carnival, Celebrity, or another line, this is exactly what the trip from the summit back to your ship looks like. See it before your port day, or relive your Alaska cruise from home.

🚡 THE TWO ICY STRAIT POINT GONDOLAS

Transporter Gondola (green) – FREE
– Links Icy Strait Point's two cruise ship docks, Adventure Landing and Wilderness Landing, about half a mile apart
– Opened in August 2021, making Wilderness Landing a vehicle-free zone in place of an estimated 72 tour buses

Sky Peak Gondola (red) – Paid ticket
– Boards at Wilderness Landing and rides 0.85 miles up Hoonah Mountain in about 8 minutes
– Climbs more than 1,500 feet from sea level to the summit
– Completed in spring 2022, replacing a 30-minute shuttle through Hoonah and up an old logging road
– Many tickets include unlimited rides during your port day, so check your excursion details

Both gondolas use 8-passenger, ADA-accessible cabins built by Doppelmayr.

🌲 FUN FACTS
– Helicopters flew in concrete and tower parts for the Sky Peak Gondola, and crews rappelled down Hoonah Mountain's steep slopes to reach the tower sites.
– On windy days and in the off-season, the cabins are unloaded and stored inside buildings at Wilderness Landing.
– From the summit, you look out toward icefields, the Fairweather Range, and Glacier Bay National Park, the ancestral homeland of the Huna Tlingit.
– The summit is also the launch point for the ZipRider, billed as the world's longest.
– Icy Strait Point only opens on days when a cruise ship is in port.

🎢 SAME RIDE SYSTEM AT DISNEY
Disney Skyliner – Walt Disney World: Doppelmayr also built the Disney Skyliner, the high-speed gondola system that opened September 29, 2019, linking EPCOT and Disney's Hollywood Studios with Disney's Riviera, Caribbean Beach, Pop Century, and Art of Animation resorts.

⚓ HISTORY OF ICY STRAIT POINT
The Huna Tlingit people have lived along Icy Strait for thousands of years. Hoonah (Tlingit: Xunaa) sits on Chichagof Island, about 30 miles west of Juneau in Alaska's Inside Passage.

In 1912, the Hoonah Packing Company built a salmon cannery just outside Hoonah, where Icy Strait Point stands today. In 1914 alone, it packed more than 2.3 million cans of salmon. The cannery changed owners several times, ran on and off until the early 1950s, then sat shuttered for decades.

In 1996, Huna Totem Corporation, Hoonah's Alaska Native village corporation, bought the cannery and began restoring it. On May 23, 2004, the Celebrity Mercury made the first cruise ship call, opening Alaska's first Indigenous-owned cruise port. Ships anchored offshore and tendered guests in until the first dock, Adventure Landing, opened in 2016.

The ZipRider opened in 2007, and Icy Strait Point was named Port of the Year at the 2020 Seatrade Cruise Awards. Wilderness Landing and the Transporter Gondola opened in August 2021, built in partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, and the Sky Peak Gondola followed in 2022. Today the restored 1912 cannery houses a museum, shops, and restaurants.
