History:
Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid officially opened on December 6, 2012, as part of Magic Kingdom's New Fantasyland expansion, which Disney announced in 2009. The ride stands in the part of Fantasyland that once held the lagoon for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage (1971–1994). Imagineers first tried to build a Little Mermaid ride for Magic Kingdom and Disneyland Paris in the early 1990s, but the idea sat on the shelf for nearly two decades. Jodi Benson and Pat Carroll returned to voice Ariel and Ursula, and Alan Menken's songs from the film were re-arranged for the ride. The Florida version adds Prince Eric's castle and a queue that winds through seaside grottos and cliffs.

The original version, The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure, opened at Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort on June 3, 2011, replacing the Golden Dreams theater in what was then Paradise Pier (renamed Paradise Gardens Park in 2018). The ride inside is nearly the same, but the building is styled as a turn-of-the-century seaside aquarium topped by a statue of King Triton instead of Prince Eric's castle.
Ride system:
Both versions run on Disney's Omnimover system, a continuous chain of vehicles that never stops moving, here with clamshells that turn to face each scene. At Walt Disney World, the same system carries guests through Haunted Mansion, Spaceship Earth, The Seas with Nemo & Friends (also in clamshells) and Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin.
