HISTORY OF MAD TEA PARTY AT MAGIC KINGDOM
Mad Tea Party is an opening day attraction at the Magic Kingdom, welcoming its first guests on October 1, 1971. The ride is inspired by the Mad Hatter and March Hare's Unbirthday Party from Walt Disney's 1951 animated film Alice in Wonderland. It follows the original Mad Tea Party at Disneyland in California, which opened with that park on July 17, 1955.
When the Magic Kingdom version opened it was completely open air. Florida sun and afternoon rain led Disney to add the large canopy roof in 1974, which is why this version can run in weather that closes other outdoor rides. The ride features 18 teacups on three small turntables that sit on one large rotating platform. Each teacup has a center wheel so riders control how fast their own cup spins, and the Dormouse pops out of the giant teapot at the center of the ride.
