Your adventure begins inside the Chinese Theatre, where guests arrive for the premiere of the Mickey Mouse cartoon short “Perfect Picnic.” But things don’t go exactly as planned! Soon, you’ll step through the movie screen and into Mickey and Minnie’s animated world before boarding Engineer Goofy’s train for a wild journey where just about anything can happen.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is a trackless Disney dark ride filled with elaborate physical sets, projection effects, animation, music and Audio-Animatronic characters. The attraction moves guests through a series of rapidly changing environments inspired by the modern Mickey Mouse animated shorts, creating the feeling of actually traveling through a Mickey cartoon.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on March 4, 2020, inside the park’s Chinese Theatre. The attraction replaced The Great Movie Ride, which had occupied the theater from the opening of Disney-MGM Studios in 1989 until its closure in 2017.
Remarkably, despite Mickey Mouse being Disney’s signature character for generations, Runaway Railway became the first ride-through attraction at a Disney theme park starring Mickey Mouse and his friends.
A second version of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway opened at Disneyland Park in California on January 27, 2023 as part of the Disney100 celebration. The Disneyland version is located inside the El CapiTOON Theater in Mickey’s Toontown and features its own elaborate queue and theater lobby before guests enter the familiar “Perfect Picnic” pre-show and Runaway Railway adventure.
