HISTORY OF TOMORROWLAND SPEEDWAY
Tomorrowland Speedway opened with Magic Kingdom on October 1, 1971, originally named Grand Prix Raceway, making it one of the park's original opening day attractions still operating today. In 1996 it was rebranded as Tomorrowland Indy Speedway through a partnership with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, adding racing décor inspired by the Indy 500. The Indy branding was later dropped and the attraction became simply Tomorrowland Speedway. During construction of TRON Lightcycle / Run, the track was shortened and rerouted to make room for the new coaster, which opened in 2023. Today, guests still drive real gas-powered cars guided by a center rail, with a working gas pedal and steering wheel, keeping alive a classic piece of Disney's original Tomorrowland vision.
