ASTRO ORBITER AROUND THE WORLD: PARK-BY-PARK HISTORY

Disney’s spinning rocket attractions have appeared in several forms around the world. Each lets guests circle above a futuristic land while controlling the height of their spacecraft, but every park gives the experience its own theme and design.

MAGIC KINGDOM — ASTRO ORBITER

Magic Kingdom’s attraction opened in Tomorrowland as Star Jets on November 28, 1974. Its elevated location above the WEDway PeopleMover station offered sweeping views of the park. During Tomorrowland’s 1994 transformation, it was redesigned as Astro Orbiter with retro-futuristic rockets circling a colorful tower and moving planets. This is the version featured in this full 4K60 sunset POV. Guests still reach the elevated loading platform by elevator, preserving one of the attraction’s most distinctive features.

DISNEYLAND PARK IN CALIFORNIA — ASTRO ORBITOR

Disneyland introduced the original Disney spinning rocket ride as Astro-Jets on March 24, 1956. Renamed Tomorrowland Jets in 1964, it was replaced by the elevated Rocket Jets in 1967. Rocket Jets operated above the PeopleMover platform until 1997. Rocket Jets opened July 2, 1967, and closed January 6, 1997. The current Astro Orbitor—spelled with an “o”—opened May 22, 1998, with a planetary design inspired by Disneyland Paris.

DISNEYLAND PARIS — ORBITRON

Orbitron, originally called Orbitron, Machines Volantes, opened with Disneyland Paris on April 12, 1992. Located in Discoveryland, it imagines how Renaissance inventors might have envisioned space travel. Its detailed planetary machinery was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings and early astronomical instruments, and later influenced Disneyland’s current Astro Orbitor.

HONG KONG DISNEYLAND — ORBITRON

Hong Kong Disneyland’s Orbitron opened September 12, 2005. Inspired by the Paris version, it places riders among a moving display of orbiting planets. Guests pilot futuristic flying saucers rather than traditional rockets and control how high they travel while circling above Tomorrowland.

SHANGHAI DISNEYLAND — JET PACKS

Jet Packs opened with Shanghai Disneyland on June 16, 2016, as a modern interpretation of Disney’s classic spinning aerial ride. Guests board futuristic jet-pack vehicles attached to a large central energy sphere by mechanical arms. Hand controls let riders adjust their elevation while flying above Tomorrowland. Its 16 arms create a noticeably different silhouette from the earlier rocket rides while moving.

FORMER DISNEY PARK VERSION: TOKYO DISNEYLAND — STARJETS
Tokyo Disneyland’s StarJets opened with the park on April 15, 1983. Inspired by Magic Kingdom’s original Star Jets, its rockets circled high above Tomorrowland for more than 34 years. The attraction permanently closed on October 10, 2017, and the area was later redeveloped for The Happy Ride with Baymax.
