There were 4 Tower of Terror rides built at Disney theme parks across the world, although only 2 are Twilight Zone Tower of Terror themed today. The 1st one to open was this one at Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World and opened July 1994. The Walt Disney World version is the only one where the elevator car travels forward through a separate show scene.
The 2nd one to open would be at Disney's California Adventure Park at the Disneyland Resort in 2004. This ride would later close in January of 2017 and reopen May 27th, 2017 as Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: Breakout!. This retheme changed the entire outside of the tower to look like something out of another galaxy. The line queue and show scenes would also be changed to a story line of the Guardians breaking out The Collectors fortress.
The 3rd ride opened in 2006 at Tokyo DisneySea at the Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan. The Tokyo Disney Sea version does not have any Twilight Zone theming but instead has a completely new back story. This version is set in the fictional Hotel Hightower that is owned by the famous adventurer Harrison Hightower III that is also a part of S.E.A. Club(Disneys fictional Society of Explorers and Adventurers). He went on many expeditions throughout the world and collected thousands of priceless artifacts. Most of these artifacts were stolen for personal gain and stored in his hotel, one of them is an idol named Shiriki Utundu, brought in by Hightower from an expedition to Africa. Hightower claimed that the natives were angry to have their beloved god taken, and that they threatened that the idol would curse him. On New Year's Eve 1899, Hightower held a press conference about his expedition to Africa, where he boasted about how he acquired the idol and denied claims of it being cursed. Just as he left the party, he mocked the idol, using its head to put out his cigar. Around midnight, he entered the elevator to retire to his private apartments in the hotel penthouse. As the elevator neared the top, the idol came to life. The idol's rage and power caused the elevator to plummet and crash on the ground floor, with Hightower inside it.
The 4th ride would open in 2007 at the Walt Disney Studios Park at the Disneyland Paris Resort in Paris, France. This version is themed after The Twilight Zone and The Hollywood Tower Hotel.
"Next Stop: The 5th Dimension. Step uneasily inside the infamous Hollywood Tower Hotel and find a dusty lobby frozen in time. Even the subdued hotel staff seems strangely out of another era. Suddenly a television set springs to life and Rod Serling welcomes you on a journey into the Twilight Zone. He reveals that on a gloomy Halloween night in 1939, some hotel patrons were riding the elevator when a violent storm struck the building… and they were never seen again. The hotel closed down and has stood empty ever since.
